The scheme involved a multi-storey car park, large mall units and the demolition of buildings in the conservation area. “Whilst the developer’s investment was warmly welcomed, it must be of the right kind” said the writers of the report.
“We have a vision for an area where people are living instead of parking over the shops; where there is life and fun after six; where good buildings are re-used, not wasted; where confident new design is encouraged and where diversity and street life are promoted through the provision of smaller units.”
Supported by over 50 organisations in the area the plan was eagerly received.
